The Yes Men Fix the World

Anticorporate pranksters Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum return with another assortment of dirty tricks played on dirtier companies. Compared to their first movie, The Yes Men (2003), this one focuses on many fewer hoaxes, but they're more elaborate and potent: in the first and most impressive, Bichlbaum passes himself off as a spokesman for Dow Chemical, which acquired Union Carbide in 2001, and announces on the BBC that Dow will finally take full responsibility for UC's role in the 1984 Bhopal disaster--which causes Dow's stock to plummet. The sequel is also more pointed than its predecessor in examining the gullibility of global media in disseminating corporate spin. (Ironically, news organizations were quick to label the Dow stunt a "cruel hoax," as if the victims' momentary disappointment were comparable to the decades of suffering caused by Union Carbide.) 87 min.
