First-time directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud have crafted a highly effective horror film that combines a plausible narrative with accomplished use of sound and image. Set in Romania and loosely based on an actual incident, the story concerns a young French couple (Olivia Bonamy and Michael Cohen) living on a ramshackle estate in the middle of the woods. After being awakened one night by loud music, they discover that their car has been moved, the first in a chilling sequence of events. Eschewing special effects, Moreau and Palud reinvigorate the classic haunted house premise by paring the plot down to its essentials. In French and Romanian with subtitles. R, 78 min. a Pipers Alley. --Joshua Katzman
