TheMassive | Stage 773 | Dance | Chicago Reader

TheMassive Closing (Theater and Galleries) New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 5 2011

Kyle Vincent Terry did some good work as artistic director of Chicago Dance Crash, and he's starting off ambitiously with his new company: TheMassive's debut production, But What About Asian Dudes: A Black Man’s Quest for Answers, tackles nothing less than race in America. But Terry's primary method in creating the piece was to record people of different races talking about who's hot and who's not, then make (often unintelligible) voiceovers out of their opinions. The haphazard, superficial result comes off sounding less like cultural commentary than Elimidate. Add a narrator (Terry) who's still on book, 16 mostly monochromatic songs, and monotonous choreography, and--despite the seven-member cast's best efforts--you've got a show that feels a lot longer than its one-hour running time. --Laura Molzahn
