Sears Catalog Building
It was to mail order what Ellis Island was to immigration. Despite a last-minute effort to transform it into a historic-district anchor, it was torn down to make way for housing. All that will survive is the original Sears tower.
United Airlines Building
Midway Airport, 1938-1994
One of Chicago's oldest modernist buildings, destroyed for the sake of airport expansion.
River Forest, 1937-1994
Demolished to make way for a strip mall that only sounds historic: "River Forest Town Centre."
Doomed in '95: Chicago Stadium; the Arts Club interior and other buildings on the 600 block of North Michigan. Endangered: Fort Sheridan; the North Shore train station on Dempster in Skokie.
