Thomas Ankersmit All Ages Soundboard

When: Sat., Sept. 20, 9 p.m. 2008

You could call Thomas Ankersmit a multi-instrumentalist—he’s bringing a modular synthesizer, a computer, and an alto saxophone to this gig—but his real instrument is the space in which he plays. The Dutch-born, Berlin-based artist establishes the boundaries of a room by filling it with dense, swarming, immersive sounds that he generates electronically. Then he tests its properties with an unamplified alto saxophone, using circular breathing to play long, unbroken single notes and shrieking split tones that draw out the site’s resonant qualities. This all may sound very academic, but the effect is thrillingly visceral. —Bill Meyer
