Could there be a character better suited to the modern multiplex than the God of Thunder, swinging a gigantic hammer? Thor, the second-tier Marvel Comics hero, arrives onscreen in the strapping form of Australian soap opera star Chris Hemsworth, who seems to be having much more fun here than the better-known stars lining up at the money teat (Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba, Rene Russo). As a Norse warrior magically transported into the 21st century, Hemsworth also gets the best lines: at one point Thor swaggers into a pet store and bellows, "I need a horse!" This is eminently missable, though the mosaic design of Asgard, Thor's mythical realm, is pretty cool. Kenneth Branagh directed (2011).
