Thousands Cheer

Many of the major Hollywood studios voiced their patriotism by releasing all-star propaganda musicals during the early months of World War II; this gangly Technicolor extravaganza (1943) was MGM's contribution. Iron-lunged Kathryn Grayson plays an army brat who convinces her pa (John Boles) to stage a mammoth morale booster, and most of Louis B. Mayer's contract serfs are glad to drop by. The bit appearances include Lionel Barrymore, Margaret O'Brien, June Allyson, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Red Skelton, and Lena Horne. George Sidney, one of the few certifiable lowbrows on the MGM lot, directed—which helps. 126 min.
