Time Froze

A pregnant woman (Hanieh Tavassoli in a commanding performance) struggles to cross an unspecified border and reunite with her lover in this desolate Iranian feature by Ali-Reza Amini. Spare but powerful, the movie shows great formal control, its subjective experience heightened by the woman's ongoing conversation with her unborn child, her unseen lover, and God. The nonlinear narrative returns repeatedly to several key images, creating motifs that accentuate the woman's loneliness and despair as well as the bone-chilling cold. The subtitles are poorly written, but the fractured syntax contributes to the sense of emotional dislocation. In Farsi with subtitles. 80 min.
