Jennifer M. Kroot follows It Came From Kuchar
(2009), her profile of underground filmmakers Mike and George Kuchar, with another pleasant if disposable portrait, this time of actor George Takei. It focuses on Takei's life after he appeared on the original Star Trek
, principally his recent work as a gay-rights activist. Takei speaks movingly about his childhood experience in a Japanese-American internment camp and his life in the closet during the 1960s and 70s. Still, Howard Stern sets the tone in the first 30 seconds when he cracks, "I'm supposed to be in the George Takei
documentary? All right, let's get that over with."
