To Master the Art Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 19 2010

Charming and intelligent, if occasionally exposition-heavy, William Brown and Doug Frew's look at Paul and Julia Child explores the couple's relationship by highlighting the parallels in their lives. She's the plucky American who demystifies French cuisine for her nation's cooks with Mastering the Art of French Cooking; he's the American intelligence officer attempting to bring the best of his nation's arts to the French (and being accused of communist sympathies for his troubles). Karen Janes Woditsch steps into Child's size 12 espadrilles with aplomb, nearly erasing memories of Meryl Streep in Julie and Julia by opting for emotional truth over mimicry, while Craig Spidle's Paul is a force of nature in his own understated, highly principled way. Brown's rock-solid supporting cast and an evocative kitchen set by Keith Pitts--enhanced by Charles Cooper's autumnal lighting--add texture and spice to this unlikely but thoroughly engaging love story. --Kerry Reid
