Tomboy | Chicago Reader

Rated NR 84 minutes 2011

Modestly conceived and executed, this intimate French drama centers on a ten-year-old girl (Zoe Heran) who moves to a new town over the summer and passes herself off as a boy with the neighborhood kids. The deception seems harmless at first, but trouble brews as another girl in the little clique (Jeanne Disson) develops a crush on the new guy. Writer-director Celine Sciamma breaks little ground here, but her story is nicely scaled to the gender-rigid world of childhood, where boys playing soccer together take as much pride in their spitting skills as any scored goal. In French with subtitles.
