Tommy Davidson met Keenen Ivory Wayans in the late 80s, when Davidson had moved to LA from his native Washington, D.C., and was working at a deli and performing stand-up at night. Shortly afterward he became an original member of Wayans's In Living Color ensemble, where he established his place in comedy history as a master of physical and verbal African-American idioms. With his short, lithe frame he uncannily embodied Sammy Davis Jr., Michael Jackson, and MC Hammer (hilariously tangled up in his harem pants) and played the perfect straight man/victim to Jamie Foxx's Wanda and Damon Wayans's Homey the Clown. In his stand-up Davidson is a shrewd social observer, often situating celebrities in pedestrian places. My favorite is his impersonation of Prince at McDonald's, screaming in falsetto, "They forgot my motherfuckin' fries!" a Thu 11/16, 7:30 PM, Fri 11/17, 7:30 and 9:45 PM, Sat 11/18, 7, 9:15, and 11 PM, Sun 11/19, 7 PM, the Improv, Woodfield Mall, Golf Rd. at Route 53, Schaumburg, 847-240-2001, $21-$23, two-drink minimum, 21+.
