Tommy's Chicago: Newly Preserved Films by Tom Palazzolo

Tom Palazzolo came of age at the time of Chicago Imagist painting and the Hairy Who, and his goofy humor reflects those influences. The seven early films on this program mostly treat serious subjects with some lightheartedness, but his intercutting of the movements of circus performers in O (1967) is less than masterful, and his juxtapositions often have the subtlety of a meat cleaver, as when nudes are accompanied by a soundtrack praising the body of a sports car in Love It/Leave It (1967) or a brief shot of a fat man accompanies a “patriotic” Green Berets song in America's in Real Trouble (1967). 83 min.
