Tomorrow Morning Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 7 2008

Laurence Mark Wythe's chamber musical uses two sets of couples to depict two anxious nights in the life of any marriage--the night before the wedding and the night before the divorce is finalized. One pair brims with hope and fear, the other has seen their dreams dashed as the fears only multiply. The not-so-surprising twist is that the two couples are actually the same couple at different ages. This adds some depth and poignancy to the proceedings, but Wythe only flirts with a complex view of matrimony before reverting to feel-good bromides. Tom Mullen's Chicago premiere is over-amplified, both in terms of sound and acting, but the energy of the cast (especially Michael Mahler as the groom-to-be) came close to winning me over nonetheless. --Zac Thompson
