Tonstartssbandht, Mystreater, Lolita Poaching, Double Morris Recommended Member Picks

When: Thu., March 8, 9 p.m. 2012

Like so many of the bands that have borrowed aesthetic DNA from the Animal Collective gene pool, Florida duo Tonstartssbandht—aka brothers Andy and Edwin White—mixes psychedelic ambient textures (sometimes quite harsh) with beautiful overdubbed vocal harmonies. The results can feel shapeless or haphazard, but when enough of the elements click into place at once, the mess can suddenly become ethereal and transcendent. From the sound of last year's Now I Am Become (Arbutus), Tonstartssbandht has figured out how to create affecting music more consistently than they did on previous releases. Most of the songs have a woozy pop hook that gets a little extra heft from a sinister heaviness, which seems to lurk just below the surface—and distinguishes the group from the crowd of uninspired AnCo mimics. —Leor Galil Mystreater, Lolita Poaching, and Double Morris open.
