Topaze

Often cited as one of the better unseen comedies of the 30s, though to modern tastes it may seem overly static and stagy. John Barrymore stars as an ivory-tower science professor cast adrift among the business sharks in this adaptation of a Marcel Pagnol play. The director is Harry D'Arrast, whose slender film output (he made only eight features in an abbreviated seven-year career) has acquired a retrospective reputation for dry-martini wit and sophistication (1933). With Myrna Loy, Albert Conti, and Luis Alberni; Ben Hecht had an uncredited hand in the screenplay.
