Trained in the Ways of Men

A frustratingly superficial look at the life and death of transgendered teen Gwen Araujo, whose murder at the hands of vindictive peers led to a nationwide campaign for wider acceptance of people outside the gender norms. Director Shelly Prevost begins with a straightforward account of the murder trial but soon veers off into an exploration of gender issues and an inspirational portrait of Araujo's mother as she tries to raise public awareness. Eventually Provost returns to the trial, but by that time Gwen has been lost in the shuffle; she never emerges as anything more than a poster child. 98 min.
