Transitions Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Sept. 27 2008

The four one-acts in Dramatis Personae's hour-long show about riding the el ring true and are generally entertaining, but that's about it: they're otherwise inconsequential. In Cara Olansky's Second City-style Rhythms of the Underground the secret thoughts of several train passengers alternate with their Stomp!-like percussive musicmaking. Though it ends patly, Sofia Mohammad and Corey Spruill's Lines cleverly dissects a cross section of west-side riders, exposing their diversity. Scott T. Barsotti's Burrowing Anxiety is slight but expert: its humorous, off-the-wall conversation between two neurotics has a dark subtext. And in Tom Bambara and Mike Cherry's monotonous but chilling Zip, a panhandler's increasingly desperate pitch challenges cynical assumptions. Cherry as Zip and Eric Sherman-Christ as an obnoxious cell phone talker give standout performances. --Laura Molzahn
