Transsiberian

Following a visit to China, a Christian missionary and his recovering alcholic wife (Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer, both playing against type) forego air travel to return to the West by transcontinental railway. En route they meet another couple, an overly attentive Spaniard (Eduardo Noriega) and his wary American girlfriend (Kate Mara), as well as a Russian police inspector (Ben Kingsley) tracing stolen drugs and money. Director Brad Anderson (The Machinist), who cowrote this thriller with Will Conroy, throws in a red herring or two as he comments on Eurotrash and the greed-fueled lawlessness of the former Soviet Union, but he ultimately makes an even stronger statement about the dark side of female empowerment. In English and subtitled Russian. R, 111 min.
