Lichen, the Boston duo of Mia Friedman and Katie McShane, dance on the line between precious and clever on the recent Shake My Bones (Lungbasket), playing intuitive art-folk that combines rousing traditionalism and dissonant experimentation. “Tell Me” opens with a tender, imploring melody that soon careens off the path, as banjo and violin knot themselves up in brambles and straighten themselves out just as quickly—the tune speaks the languages of old-time music and free improv with equal fluency. At times Friedman and McShane seem to revel in discord to no good purpose, but whatever they do with their braided voices, it’s clearly intentional—as they prove with lovely performances such as “Carolina Lady.” They have a lot of ideas, and they’re only in their early 20s—that is, they’ve got some serious potential. —Peter Margasak
