Travi$ Scott is a 21-year-old rapper and beat maker who in a very short time has positioned himself as one of the most influential budding artists in hip-hop, though he's only been in the game seriously for about a year and has yet to produce or perform on a track that's cracked the Billboard pop charts. Scott got his initial breakthrough via T.I., but what's really put the young Texan on the map has been his work with Kanye's GOOD Music camp—including production on last year’s Cruel Summer compilation, Pusha T’s most recent mixtape, and two tracks on Yeezus. Earlier this year he released his official solo debut, Owl Pharaoh (Grand Hustle), an ambitious album-length EP on which a wide-ranging cast of guests (Kanye, 2 Chainz, drill producer Young Chop, chillwave prime mover Toro y Moi) contribute to a singularly dark and idiosyncratic vision that feels strangely radio friendly. He’s going to have to land a song on the Top Ten before he lives up to all the "new Kanye" talk surrounding him, but that’s clearly more a question of "when" than "if." —Miles Raymer
