The small, uncertain world of two little girls abandoned by their mother is beautifully evoked in this 2008 feature by South Korean expatriate So Yong Kim (In Between Days). After their father disappears, mom (Soo Ah Lee) sets off to find him, parking seven-year-old Jin (Hee-yeong Kim) and five-year-old Bin (Song-hee Kim) with their rough, neglectful aunt (Mi Hyang Kim). The older child better understands what's going on and melts down accordingly, while the younger one tries to comfort her; their role reversal is completely credible if not quite conventional. This is a drama of tiny objects—coins, cookies, grasshoppers—but the pain coursing silently through it can be overwhelming. In Korean with subtitles.
