A strange movie is playing in my head. Opening shot: a verdant meadow where horned satyrs lounge leering in eucalyptus trees, strumming electric lutes. A young woman in black comes walking down a road, carrying a baby in her arms. Storm clouds gather and the rain comes; the drops turn to bits of multicolored confetti, then to grains of old wheat. On the sound track comes a mellifluous swirl of flat-picked guitar and upside-down drum rhythms. Now I'm ignoring the visuals and digging the sounds; it's Trip Shakespeare, coolest dream-music band in the midwest. They've mastered one of the finer points of popcraft, the ability to create a texture you want to touch. Applehead Man--what an LP! Love, death . . . all the great themes. The songs ache with melodic feeling. And I love Dan Wilson's wondrous jagged lead guitar. Great dream-music, yes--Trip Shakespeare takes me to another place. Saturday, Gaspars, 3159 N. Southport; 871-6680.
