Three years after Isaac Hayes topped the album charts with his score for Shaft, the singer moved in front of the cameras to play a private detective in this violent 1974 blaxploitation flick. He and his partner knock off a bail-jumping gangster, the victim's foulmouthed girlfriend (Nichelle Nichols of Star Trek) vows revenge, and the ensuing mayhem leads to a smorgasbord of hammy death scenes and a hospital shoot-out. Jonathan Kaplan (The Accused) keeps the pace lively; a pulsing Hayes score and a cameo by B-movie legend Dick Miller add to the guilty pleasure. With Yaphet Kotto, clad in plaid. R, 91 min.
