To the Editor:
I'm beginning to wonder if Mr. Greene himself isn't the impetus behind Ed Gold's BobWatch columns. Just compare their last names. Quite a coincidence, isn't it? But seriously, I find it hard to believe that Mr. Gold writes in earnest. If he really finds Bob Greene so offensive, why does he serve pro bono as his press agent, republishing the essence of Greene's columns for all Reader eyes to see?
Bob Greene is an inexcusably poor writer, and an ignorant sap to boot. I am somewhat insulted that the Reader believes I need Ed Gold's columns to inform or remind me of these facts. Indeed, Mr. Gold should realize that the reputation his BobWatch columns actually undercut is his own. He spews venom so excessive it's inexplicable. If you hate Bob so much, Ed, do what I do; ignore him. Please, stop providing him more publicity. You are, in effect, helping to pour the concrete that will cement his byline for years to come.
Oh, and while I'm on the subject: the Reader, in my estimation, has erred setting aside yet additional column inches (on top of those reserved for Hot Type) for grinding the petty axes it would wield against the competition. Your paper blows them away; why stoop to their level?
