To the editors:

Bill Wyman, in his piece on Andy Kaufman entitled "The Loneliness of a Long-distance Comic" (Oct. 25), failed to mention the details of certain events which captured the true bizarreness of the ex-comedian.

For instance, when Kaufman appeared in a neck brace with manic wrestler Lawler on David Letterman, Wyman neglected to point out how, after a verbal shoot-out, Lawler slapped Kaufman right out of his chair. Kaufman (practically in tears) then ran behind Letterman's desk, grabbed Dave's coffee mug, and spewed its contents on Lawler. After yelling threats of lawsuit in between lengths of being bleeped out, he ran off the set in fear for his life. Dave managed to blow away the cloud of horror that fell over the audience by saying, "I don't know how many times I've said it, no throwing coffee!"

And I wonder why Wyman never mentioned one of Kaufman's final appearances on Late Night when he showed up with three Malaysian-looking young boys he "adopted." Kaufman not only never cracked a smile, but never cracked a joke! He looked like a completely mental, nervous, paranoid molester. It was sad to see someone I thought had some redeeming comic qualities really hit the skids. I just wish Wyman could have included these details which seem to sum up Kaufman's lunacy.
