Two Players From the Bench

Two doltish veterans of the Balkan war, a Serb and a Croat, are kidnapped as part of a scheme to vindicate a Croatian warlord accused of war crimes. The pair are selected for their remarkable resemblance to missing witnesses who can provide the warlord with an alibi, but the Serb and Croat's constant bickering and scheming creates major complications for their captors. Less a commentary on the absurdity of war than a dark odd-couple comedy, this mordant 2006 feature by Croatian writer-director Dejan Sorak benefits from a witty script and first-rate performances by Goran Navojec and Borko Peric as the scruffy duo. In Croatian with subtitles. 112 min.
