When: Thu., Sept. 10, 9 p.m. 2015

On their recently released second album Green Lanes (Trouble in Mind) the British duo Ultimate Painting keep things deceptively simple and direct, crafting no-frills guitar pop that slowly and nonchalantly attaches itself to your brain—and doesn’t soon let go. Jack Cooper (Mazes) and James Hoare (Veronica Falls) create a seductive lattice of low-key strumming, chill arpeggios, and unflashy leads as they wed the hypnotic charm of the Velvet Underground’s 1969 self-titled album with the artfulness of late-80s New Zealand pop a la Flying Nun. Cooper and Hoare convey a laid-back front-porch vibe, singing with unhurried ease and seeming content to please only themselves. The album throws some mild curveballs, like the 60s-hippie twang of “(I’ve Got the) Sanctioned Blues” and the talk-singing of “Woken by Noises”—which sounds like a tribute to Courtney Barnett—but by and large the duo settle into their own catchy sweet spot, and they’re all the better for it. CoCoComa open, and they insist it’s their last show for a long while, as guitarist Anthony Cozzi is headed west.
