Uncle Nashaat

70 minutes 2013

First-time Palestinian filmmaker Aseel Mansour investigates the mysterious 1982 death of his paternal uncle, Nashaat. The man was thought to have been killed in combat by Israeli troops, but Mansour uncovers evidence suggesting he may have been murdered, either by Fatah agents or by jealous relatives who wanted his olive grove. Along the way Mansour provokes several family members (including his father, a successful poet) into sharing unpleasant memories they'd never spoken of before. This is a compelling family history, though fairly amateurish as filmmaking; many of the on-screen confrontations evoke the manufactured intimacy of reality TV. In Arabic with subtitles.
