Under Construction The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 19 2010

Jackalope Theatre Company's one-act focuses on a woman whose late father, a construction worker, never seemed to have enough time for his family. Trying to process her conflicted feelings, she obsessively builds assemblages packed with memory-jogging knickknacks, while rock 'n' roll versions of the classic tune "Among My Souvenirs" play in the background. Adapted by director A.J. Ware, writer Andrew Swanson, and production designer Melanie Berner from a 2009 play by Charles Mee (which was, in turn, inspired by the work of Norman Rockwell and installation artist Jason Rhoades), the script has a generic, cobbled-together feel. But the striking environmental set--which functions as the woman's childhood home, an art gallery, and the thrift shop where she works--drew me into the characters' emotional world. --Albert Williams
