Under the Skin

Iris (Samantha Morton) is deeply affected by the death of her mother, who she believes favored her sister Rose. She deflects her sorrow and alienation into sexual experiences that become increasingly dangerous—one involves a potentially violent stranger, others devastating emotional consequences. Stories about women descending into sexual obsession too often contain patronizing scenes that don't allow us to identify with the character but function mainly as erotica, encouraging us to fear for her well-being even as we appreciate her sexiness. Though some of Iris's misfortunes seem contrived or too easily resolved, this feature set in Liverpool occasionally creates a strong sense of her point of view during its exploitive moments. Written and directed by Carine Adler; with Claire Rushbrook.
