Undershorts Film Festival

The fifth Undershorts Film Festival presents an evening of 30 short videos, interspersed with and followed by live music. Though described as underground work, many of the videos are pretty mainstream: Aaron Augenblick's Ramblin' Man, whose swirling animation mimes the lilting Hank Williams song on the sound track, could be a stylish music video. More engaging are R. Arnold's clever The Morphology of Desire, which morphs together the covers of romance novels to illustrate how the characters' cliched poses announce similar emotional states, and Guy Maddin's superb The Eye, Like a Strange Balloon, Mounts Towards Infinity (1995), which uses Odilon Redon's famous eye-as-balloon image to suggest travel and magical transformation within tiny, cramped spaces.
