Underworld: Evolution

A goth's wet dream, Underworld (2003) was set in a hellish nocturnal Budapest patrolled by warring clans of vampires and werewolves, with Kate Beckinsale strutting around in a black-rubber bondage suit as a righteous vampire/assassin. Writer-director Len Wiseman, now the star's husband, wisely moves this sequel to the countryside and wastes less time dispensing the same grog of grisly CGI combat and mythical mumbo jumbo, this time involving a magical amulet and a legendary werewolf. Bill Nighy returns too briefly as Beckinsale's crusty vampire mentor, leaving Derek Jacobi—sorry, Sir Derek Jacobi—to pick up the slack as resident British elder. R, 105 min.
