Unfair to Four-Plus-Ones

To the editors:

Just when we thought it was safe to go back into the four-plus-ones . . . along comes Neighborhood News ["A Strip Mall in Edgewater: class warfare or small-time tiff?" by Ben Joravsky, January 15] with yet another biased and inaccurate slam at the quality of life in those lovely buildings.

I can't judge the conditions of four-plus-ones in Edgewater, but I did live in one for five years in Lakeview/Newtown and I can heartily recommend the experience. In fact, I would still be living there if the landlord hadn't taken such good care of his "tenement" that he raised the rent far beyond my means!

I suggest that Carl Condit and Ben Joravsky check out the four-plus-ones on the north side, especially between Armitage and Irving Park Road, before dismissing the value of these buildings wholesale. Many four-plus-ones feature such "luxury" details as heated garages, party rooms, swimming pools, exercise areas, etc. Some have even "gone condo," as ads in the real estate section of the Reader will attest!

In other words . . . don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Just sign me,

A satisfied tenant

North side

Ben Joravsky replies:

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. And while we're on the subject, Alderman Bernard Stone wrote to say that the City Council vote to make the Edgewater site a tax incremental district was not unanimous; it was 41 to 1. Stone was the lone dissenter.
