Unfinished Song

A young ethnomusicologist recording folk songs in northwestern Iran (Ali Reza Anoushfar ) learns about a woman who knows many of them by heart but has been imprisoned for defying a government ban against women singing in public. Director Maziar Miri documents Iran's bureaucracy, stern Islamic restrictions on women, and convenient dismissal of a certain degree of cultural heritage, but the film's emotional context is provided by the arid, hilly, seemingly boundless landscape that inspires the songs' expansive spirit.
