To the editors:
While I greatly admire Michael Miner's work--including his reporting on the financial troubles at In These Times--I want to clarify a point in his November 26 column.
I am concerned that, intentionally or not, the piece may have unfairly cast the National Writers Union (NWU) in a negative light. Miner wrote that the union has been "hounding" In These Times for payment of debts to free-lancers. If so, it's only because the NWU is doing its job. In a very difficult situation, the NWU has thus far acted diligently and, for the most part, responsibly on behalf of the writers it represents.
In no small way, In These Times's survival comes thanks to--not in spite of--the National Writers Union and its members.
