To the editor:

Tori Marlan is courageous indeed for daring to write about the notoriously vindictive "church" of Scientology ["Death of a Scientologist," August 16]. For all the pains Scientology defenders take to compare themselves to other faiths like Judaism, Catholicism, etc, there is one major difference. At least Catholics will cop to believing certain aspects of the faith that are difficult for nonbelievers to accept, such as the corporeal presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. I have yet to hear a Scientologist admit to actually believing in the preposterous science fictions that make up the core of Scientology teachings. Scientologists can gripe all they want about being misunderstood, but they carefully avoid any serious discussion about their "faith" because the central tenets are unpalatable hogwash. As a theologist, L. Ron Hubbard was a rank amateur, and this flaw will continue to be a raw spot for Scientologists for years to come.
