Uptown Opera The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Aug. 19 2013

In 1957, the historical setting for this bluegrass and rock opera about Appalachian migration to Chicago, the Tribune ran a melodramatic report on the city's new residents: "The hillbillies' home and family life, experienced investigators say, is the most depraved of any they have ever encountered." Genesis Ensemble's depiction is more sympathetic, tracing the story of a West Virginia girl seeking work in the big city. But director Annie Perry's cast struggles to deliver characters or voices strong enough to fill the Preston Bradley Center's vast performance space. Though some of the bluegrass numbers are stirring, they can't do the heavy plot lifting they're called on to provide in this rigidly formatted piece, which has almost no spoken dialogue. —Keith Griffith
