Uptown's Falcons

Thought I'd mention one important thing your otherwise terrific Uptown article [March 30] failed to mention--on the top of the fire escape, on the back of the Uptown Theater, a pair of peregrine falcons have a nest box, placed and studied by Field Museum ornithologists. The peregrine, almost extinct in the 70s due to DDT poisoning, has made an amazing comeback in Chicago and is now the official city bird. Zoom and G/G, the resident Uptown pair for a number of years, mate, hunt pigeons and other birds, and fledge their young behind the Uptown, and their low scrape provides for some of the finest falcon watching anywhere (as well as a really relatively safe urban fledge for the young raptors).
