Urlakis & Cusick | Stage 773 | Improv/Sketch | Chicago Reader

Urlakis & Cusick Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 17 2011

In their crisp black suits, Dave Urlakis and Sean Cusick look like throwbacks to early Shelley Berman—and their feisty, cerebral sketch comedy suggests Berman, too. Most of the scenes involve twisted variations on male competitiveness, as when two expectant fathers trade tips and taunts involving baby names ("Do you have the balls to name your white kid 'Barack?'") There isn't a dud here, but the best scene features a pair of academics collaborating on a paper that's blown up into a book. The project becomes both a metaphor for an unplanned pregnancy ("Are you even sure that it's my idea?") and an excuse for a scene-within-a-scene where Thomas Jefferson and George Washington exchange an escalating series of scabrous insults. —Kerry Reid
