Because this print of the 1970 Indian film is in unsubtitled Hindi, I can only make a tentative assessment, but there's relatively little dialogue, and a summary is being prepared for the screening. A bus driver expects complete subservience from his wife, but her younger sister urges her to assert her autonomy. Director Mani Kaul mixes up the chronology, intercutting scenes from different moments in this unhappy marriage. The influence of Robert Bresson is evident throughout the film, especially in its suggestive use of offscreen sound. Kaul depicts the slow rhythms of rural life with deliberate editing and the couple's growing alienation from each other with formally composed images of them facing in different directions. 110 min.
