A few years ago a small group of producers working at the border of hip-hop and electronic dance music started commingling underground southern “trap rap” and contemporary big-room EDM—and discovering a surprising synergy between the two in the process. The result, known simply as “trap,” combines trap rap’s stuttering triplet fills, booming 808 kicks, and menacing synthesizer riffs with ravey build-and-release patterns and an irrepressible euphoric energy. And though critics have objected to the way some artists have appropriated imagery associated with black-on-black violence for the benefit of a largely affluent white audience, trap has accumulated fans by the millions. Masked DJ and producer UZ is one of the biggest stars of this breakout scene, and though it’s hard to do much but roll your eyes at the gun fetishism that permeates his work, he’s also one of subgenre’s most gifted artists—his intuitive grasp of dynamics and mood that sometimes makes his music feel almost symphonic. —Miles Raymer BOAT (aka Big Once and Trentino), Zebo, and DJ White Owl open.
