Vacation Dad, Bones, Hunter Husar Agenda Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Feb. 20, 9 p.m. 2013

Minneapolis-based DIY dude Andrew Todryk, aka Vacation Dad, makes psychedelic, hypnagogic pop: listening to the EP Livin (which Todryk released in October on his Two Michael Jordans label) feels like drifting into an afternoon nap on a picturesque beach, when everything is slightly out of focus and reality blurs into the dream world. The songs achieve a state of Zen using simple, blissed-out percussion loops, delayed synths, and a smidgen of reverb-smeared vocals—“Grande Gordo” and “Cosmico Cazadora” especially have a hallucinatory appeal. About half the EP is devoted to remixes that pump up the tranquil tunes, which to my ears don’t benefit from such drastic changes in mood and tempo—Vacation Dad’s songs work better when they’re inviting you to float away. —Leor Galil Bones and Hunter Husar open.
