Dear Editor:

Francine Less is not alone in her disappointment at The Vagina Monologues [Letters, January 5]. I thought Eve Ensler played it safe by treating that organ almost exclusively as a toy or a metaphor, only briefly mentioning its function as an arena for childbirth and rape, and by basing the orgasm monologue's humor in tired ethnic stereotypes. But I was most surprised at the number of women who brought male companions, knowing that even the men who understood the jokes would be unlikely to laugh out loud at them.

Sincerely,

Barbara Swordlow
