Vanishing Points The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 20 2010

Martin Jones's picaresque of grief sets Beth, a young artist whose straight-arrow parents and younger sister have been killed by an unknown assailant, on a journey across America and through her own demons of filial sorrow and resentment. Jones based his script on the still-unsolved 1972 murders of the Peak family in Grand Island, Nebraska, but this isn't In Cold Blood: Part Two. Jones is more interested in exploring survivor's guilt than criminal motivations. Dan Foss's staging for Point of Contention gets a bit overwrought, as do Jones's metaphors. But Stacie Hauenstein delivers a credible portrait of anguish and middle-child identity crisis as Beth, and there are strong supporting performances from Morgan Manasa as her steady older sis and Victoria Bucknell as a hyperactive California scam artist. --Kerry Reid
