Vanities Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through April 30 2011

The first two acts of Jack Heifner's 1976 comedy about cheerleader girlfriends are pretty perfunctory. But the third--in which they reunite as adults for a bitter luncheon--kicks the play up into something more sophisticated than an After School Special. The same can be said for this North Lakeside Players production. If you're patient, you'll see some good work at the end, including Kelly McGuigan as a housewife with a big stake in a disintegrating relationship. Frank Farrell and Gwendolyn Kelly-Masterton's resourceful staging places each scene on a different level of the historic Gunder mansion, making it easier to accept Heifner's time jumps. It does little, though, to cope with the actors' rudimentary tics. --Dan Jakes
