Variety Lights

Federico Fellini's first directorial effort, codirected with Alberto Lattuada, shows him beginning to probe the delicate psyches of “show” people, for whom life is a series of sleazy delusions and forlorn hopes (1949). Giulietta Masina plays an aging mistress whose man, the head of a shabby touring company, goes off with a younger woman but finally returns. A kind of comedy, Variety Lights maps out that special Fellini territory where the facades are always cracking and the magic is always unhappily unreal.
