On the recent Amnesia (Siltbreeze) this Philadelphia trio does scrappy indie rock the old-school way, with rudimentary playing that doesn’t dull the shine of the hooky melodies and forceful, unflashy singing. The tunes pivot around the loose but powerful grooves of bassist Kat Bean and drummer Tiff Yoon, but the focal point is singer-guitarist Cat Park, who seems to be an admirer of Mary Timony (Ex Hex, Helium), given the wiry asides that snake out of her rough-hewn power chords. Bean and Park alternate on wobbly lead vocals, usually supporting each other with sweet background harmonies; many of the songs address heartbreak and the louts responsible for it, and the two women dig into their words with real oomph. I’m not sure what Amanda X will sound like when its members get to be better musicians, but for now the tension between their rudimentary playing and their catchy, melodically generous songwriting provides a lot of the band’s infectious charm. —Peter Margasak
