I wasn't surprised to read that Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura is headed for Hollywood; like many young industry hotshots, he has a lacerating visual style but no clue about how to tell a story. This hyperkinetic zombie/yakuza/samurai mishmash (2000) finds two escaped prisoners arriving for a forest rendezvous with a gang of murderous thugs, when an evil spell begins to resurrect the numerous corpses the hoods have buried there. The grisly violence and whiplash editing continue unabated for almost two hours, making this a pretty good video game but not much of a movie. In Japanese with subtitles.
