When: Fri., Dec. 19, 8 p.m. 2014

When I think of a Toys for Tots gift drive at a music-based event, I usually think of rock bands trying to generate a little holiday generosity—but tonight’s show isn’t confusing its feel-good cause with feel-good tunes. Xtal Fsck (the duo of Jason Soliday and Jon Satrom), Personal Injury Lawyer, and Instinct Control traffic in abrasive, antisocial sounds, as does nominal headliner Vertonen (aka veteran experimental musician Blake Edwards). In recent years Vertonen has toned down the noise quotient a bit and started to deliver queasy tape manipulations and warped abstractions, but for this set Edwards promises something of a return to his punishing industrial roots. The source material I heard in a couple of shared sound files consisted of in-the-red, speaker-shredding blasts of extended, violently pulsating noise, which were recorded with a microcassette recorder and will be mixed in real time tonight. There’s no admission fee, but organizer KG Price asks that attendees bring one new unwrapped toy. You might want to bring earplugs as well. —Peter Margasak
